Srinagar, Sep 3, CNS: Army Thursday claimed that it killed four militants in a nigh long gunfight in North Kashmir’s Handwara forests. The Army spokesperson N.N.Joshi told CNS that one of the Army commandos was also killed during the gun fight. “We have been trying to ascertain the identity of the militants. As soon as they will be identified we will get back to you,” Joshi said.
A senior police officer said that Army's 6 RR patrolling party was fired upon by a group of militants in a forest area in Sochalwari village of Vilgam in Handwara of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district late Wednesday evening.
“Soon after the incident, the government forces cordoned the whole area. Subsequently, additional reinforcement of army's 9 Para and SOG, 98 CRPF, reached to the spot. As the whole area was cordoned off the militants present in the area opened fire upon the forces and tried to break the cordon. The fire was retaliated, ensuing in a gunfight which ended on Thursday morning”
"Four unidentified militants and a trooper of 9 Para were killed during the firefight", he said, adding that three army soldiers also received bullet injuries. “Four AK-47 rifles, 4 UBGL and other war like equipments were recovered from the encounter site.”
Pertinently, Handwara encounter broke out shortly after gunfight in Rafiabad’s Ladoora village ended with killing of army man and Lashkar-e-Islam militant, Riyaz Ahmad Mir. (CNS)
