Baramulla, Nov 14, CNS: The last militant from Palhalan was laid to rest amid pro freedom slogans on Monday afternoon.
Thousands of mourners participated in the last rites of Ashiq Ahmed Bhat, a Hizb militant who was killed along with his associate Toib Majid of Brat Kalan Sopore in Zachildara area of Handwara town in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday night.
Local sources said that the body of Ashiq was handed over by police to family on Monday midnight.
Thousands of people assembled at the house of the slain militant who was taken in a procession and then laid to rest at Martyrs Graveyard Palahalan.
Ashiq was the last militant from Palhalan, the area once known for militancy and stone-pelting incidents.
He is survived by three brothers, two sisters and parents.
According to police he joined militant ranks in April 2015 when he was a Class 10th student. “No FIR stands registered against him in any police station,” said a police official to news agency CNS.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted between protesters and the government forces deployed in the area shortly after the culmination of last rites of the Hizb militant Ashiq Ahmed.
Witnesses said shortly after the culmination of last rites of the slain militant, large number of youth hit to roads and pelted stones on the deployed forces near Jammu Kashmir Bank.
They added that government forces responded with tear-smoke shelling.
Reports said that a large number of people participated in the last rites of another Hizb slain militant Toib Majid at Bratkalan Sopore.
The mourners chanted pro-freedom slogans. The shops and other business establishments remained shut in Palhalan, Pattan and Bratkalan and adjacent areas. (CNS)
