Kupwara, July 11, CNS: An encounter between militants and government forces in Kandi forest area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district claimed the life of an army commando on Wednesday.
Reports said that a soldier was killed in the initial exchange of fire.
An official said that Kandi forest area was brought under siege on Tuesday night when militants fired upon a patrol party of 47 Rashtriya Rifles of Indian Army. The search operation was halted for night. On Wednesday, search operation resumed while contact with hiding militants as established.
Official added that during the exchange of fire, a soldier received bullet injuries. He was evacuated to nearest hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The official identified the slain soldier Sepoy Mukul Meena from 4 Para.
The intermittent firing between militants and government forces were reported for hours together. (CNS)
