Three militants were killed in a gunfight with the government forces at Wani Mohalla in Khudwani area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district early Sunday, police said.

Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid said that three bodies of the militants were recovered from the gunfight site. The identity of the slain militants was not immediately known.

An army spokesman in Srinagar also confirmed the killing of three militants.

In a tweet, Vaid said the militants were responsible for the killing of a police constable Mohd Saleem of Kulgam whose body was recovered yesterday from Kulgam.

Saleem was abducted by the militants from his home in Kulgam district on Friday night.

Police spokesman said A joint patrol of security forces in the wee hours of morning today launched searches at Redwani area in District Kulgam after it received credible inputs about the presence of the militants in a cluster of houses. As the security forces advanced, hiding militants fired resulting in a brief encounter in which three militants were killed. No collateral damage occurred during the encounter.

On the basis of the incriminating materials seized, the killed militants were identified as Muawiya, a foreigner of Pakistani origin, Suhail Ahmad Dar of Redwani Balaa and Mudassar @Rehaan of Katarsoo; all involved in the killing of Constable Mohd Saleem. As per police records the terrorists were affiliated with the proscribed terror outfit LeT and HM.

Mauwiya’s involvement was established in a number of civilian killings. Suhail who was working as a laborer earlier after he had dropped out from school had later joined a terror outfit. Police probe is on for ascertaining complicity of the other co-conspirators who assisted in the commission of the gruesome crime leading to the death of police person Saleem.
