MGNREGA employees decide to continue protest

Srinagar, July 23, CNS: Contractual workers engaged under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act have decided to continue their protest across Jammu and Kashmir against government failure to frame job regularization policy.

MGNREGA Employees Association Chairman Syed Jaffar has appealed all the employees to register the protest at state level.

“MGNREGA workers working in Rural Development Department from categories POS, TAS, Account Assistants, MIS Operators and GRS’s since 2009 are requested to make the protest successful all over state,” he said.

He said the strike will continue till government resolves the their issue.

The workers appealed Governor Administration to fulfill their long pending demand as soon as possible.

Contractual workers engaged under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act have been continuously holding demonstrations across Jammu and Kashmir. The employees also held protest in Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh region.

On Monday thousands of contractual workers assembled here in Pratap Park and staged peaceful sit in. He said, “It is very painful that MGNREGA staff is highly qualified but are compelled to work on wages, which are even less than wages of skilled labourers working under MGNREGA and as compared to other centrally sponsored schemes running in J&K.

He said a committee had been constituted under Commissioner Secretary that recommended our absorption. “We will protest till we are not absorbed in the department,” the Chairman MGNREGA Contractual Employees Association said.
