Srinagar, Apr 4, CNS: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Tuesday condemned in strong words firing on Sub-district hospital Shopian by forces.

“ This act of unspeakable brutality is shocking and unacceptable,”  said DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a communique.

“On Sunday, forces resorted to unprovoked firing on Shopian hospital that worsened the condition of admitted patients and made the working of doctors difficult,” he said.

DAK President said this happened when doctors and paramedical staff were attending injured patients.

“It is a wanton disregard to International Humanitarian Law under which medical facilities must be protected in times of war and civil unrest,” he said.

Dr Nisar said there can be no justification for targeting a medical facility at any time.

“These are acts of utmost savagery,” he said.

Dr Nisar said these attacks disrupt medical services and endanger care providers at a time when their services are needed most.

“ Such attacks on crucial life-saving assets during emergencies put lives of sick and wounded at risk,” he added.

Dr Nisar said in the past also, there have been attacks on hospitals, health care workers and ambulances and it appears to have become a new norm.

“This mad pattern has generated fear and anxiety among health care workers who find it extremely difficult to work under such hostile conditions,” he said.
