DAK to observe Sep 07 as Black Day Govt fails to restore flood-hit hospitals

Srinagar, Sep 5, CNS: The executive members of Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK), Resident Doctors Association (RDA) and Medical Employees Federation (MEF) of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar and associated hospitals today in a meeting at Srinagar decided to observe September 7 as black day in protest against government’s indifference to restore flood-hit hospitals.

In a joint statement Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan President DAK, Dr Adil Ashraf President RDA and Shabir Langoo President MEF said that doctors and paramedics will wear black bands on Monday as government has failed to revive flood affected hospitals.

GMC and associated hospitals were devastated by last year floods which damaged machinery and infrastructure in these premier hospitals.

One year after floods our premier hospitals have not been restored and patients suffer the consequences.

Cancer patients are worst hit as Cobalt 60 and CT Simulator of radiation oncology department of SMHS hospital is yet to be replaced.

These terminally sick patients are dying as they are devoid of life saving treatment which is essential for their survival.

SMHS hospital is without Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine for last one year which is vital for diagnosing life threatening conditions thus jeopardizing the lives of critically sick patients.

Majority of patients are referred to private labs for investigations because of lack of laboratory equipments in these premier hospitals.

Patients are dying of infections in these hospitals due to lack of facilities to test for viral, fungal and majority of bacterial infections.

Even the life saving equipments like ventilators which were damaged in floods have not been replaced and patients are dying for want of life support.

The lack of machinery and equipments in these tertiary care hospitals which are crucial life saving assets has adversely affected patient care.

Government is not serious to rebuild these premier institutions which are being run by a re-employed principal who instead of restoring flood-hit hospitals is busy in retaining his illegally occupied position. (CNS)
